Lili Afshar (born in 1338 in Tehran) is an Iranian classical guitar player. She is the first female musician in the world who has earned a doctorate in the field of classical guitar performance. He is a professor of music at the University of Memphis, USA.

Lily Afshar was born on March 18, 1338 in Tehran. His descent is Azeri. She is the first female musician in the world who has earned a doctorate in the field of classical guitar performance. He is the grandson of Reza Afshar, the Minister of Roads during Reza Shah's time. At the age of ten, he became interested in this instrument when he saw him playing the guitar while visiting one of his relatives and started learning the guitar.

 

Darius Afrasiabi was his first teacher. His grandmother played strings and his father, who was familiar with playing the violin and piano, also encouraged him. As a child, he gave a concert in the German Church and in the Youth Palace. After finishing high school, he went to America in 1355 and continued his studies in the field of music and guitar. Afshar received his bachelor's degree from the Boston Conservatory of Music and went to the New England Conservatory of Music for a master's degree in guitar playing under Neil Anderson. After that, Afshar was able to complete a doctorate under the supervision of Bruce Helsman at Florida State University, and in this way, she became the first woman in the world to receive a doctorate in guitar playing.

Afshar also studied for some time at "Banff Center for Visual Arts" and "Spen Music Festival" and was awarded an honorary diploma of "Kijana Dresi Jena Music Academy" in Italy. Lily Afshar earned her professorship at the University of Memphis in 1989, where she teaches music to undergraduate and graduate students and a doctorate in guitar performance, where she was awarded the university's Distinguished Professor Award in 2000.

Performance and style

Lily Afshar was one of twelve international guitarists chosen to play Andres Segovia's appearance in his advanced classes at the University of Southern California. It was then that after this class Maestro Segovia predicted in an interview on NBC evening news about Afshar that one day he will become a famous musician. His interest in contemporary music led him to be one of the first performers of the works of Reza Valli, Gary Eyster, Gerard Rozhed, Loris Chobanian, Aren Melens, Kamran Injeh, Barbara Kolb, Marilyn Ziffrin and Salvador Brutons among others.

He has held many concerts in Iran, America, England, Ireland, Canada, France, Denmark, Italy, Africa, New Zealand, Australia and South America, as well as in "London Wigmore Hall", "Kennedy Performing Arts Center", "Music Festival" Grand Titan", "Span Music Festival", "Banff School of Visual Arts", "Menton Music Festival" and "American Academy in Rome".

The Washington Post has described Lily Afshar as "incredibly innocent, perfect and remarkable". She also won the Orville H. Award as the best female classical guitarist.
